Anyone up for a game of Operation?

This is an article from io9 featuring drawings of gruesome "wound men" which were diagrams meant to instruct surgeons in the olden days on how to remove swords from a man's body. Here is a hyperlink to the article. Really weird yet fascinating.

What the game of Operation would look like in the Middle Ages

  1. A.) That is gruesome.
B.) If that were actually the game of operation in the Middle Ages, do you think they would use real human beings?
C.) Glad I don't live in the Middle Ages.

  2. Though very gruesome indeed, I suppose it did serve as a helpful guide for those in charge of removing such items from other humans during the Middle Ages. The i09 article by Cyriaque Lamar was interesting as well.

  3. Even though this is gruesome, doctors have always been needed in history but I'm sure not all of them could remember how to do some surgeries. Diagrams, no matter how gruesome the drawing may be, is always helpful.

  4. Why couldn’t they just yank the blades out? I'm no medical expert, but I don’t think doctors could have considered saving the life of a man wounded as such.

Of course if the victim was lucky enough to have a few blades removed from non-life-threatening areas, then this diagram would be very useful. Plus, why go overkill on one guy like that when you have a sea of enemies to worry about?
